Spectacular neoclassical style, 19th century antique, American Gorham complete eight-piece tea set, crafted out of coin silver, comprising: one hot water urn with stand and original burner, stands approximate 15" high and weighs approximate 2.8 kg; two tea pots, each stands approximate 8” high and weighs approx. 1.1 kg. Each (2.2 kg. Total weight for the 2); one coffee pot, stands approximate 11" high and weighs approx. 1.3 kg; one milk jug, stands approx. 7.5" high and weighs approximate .4 kg; one open sugar bowl, stands approx. 4.5" high and weighs approx. .4 kg; one covered sugar bowl, stands approx. 7" high and weighs approximate .8 kg. And one large oval handled tray, measures approx. 34" x 19.5” and weighs approximate 5.2kg. Approximate Total weight of 8-piece set: 13.1 kilograms/421 troy oz. All seven pieces are hallmarked “GORHAM 355” and the back of the tray is marked: “GORHAM 010 26M”. All pieces with matching engraved figural and scroll decorations. This Historic Sensational Tea Service was presented to the Calders who were part of the Lochiel Iron Works during the Civil War. On the board of directors was a general Simon Cameron who was the Secretary of War Cabinet member for President Lincoln. Simon Cameron was key to getting Abraham Lincoln elected in one of the states. Lincoln returned the favor by making him Secretary of War. Inscribed: “Presented to Mrs. Regina C. Calder by the Board of Directors of the LOCHIEL IRON COMPANY in testimony of their regard for William Calder Esq. Chairman of Building Committee Gen’l Simon Cameron. Samuel Small. J.R. Eby. G.D. Coleman January 16th 1866” Simon Cameron was an influential American businessman and politician who served as United States Secretary of War for Abraham Lincoln at the start of the American Civil War. Cameron made his fortune in railways, canals and banking, and founded the Bank of Middletown. He then turned to a life of politics.
